Lake City was founded as a mining town in the 1870's and is now a Colorado Historical District. It is considered one of the undiscovered gems of the Rockies. Located at the junction of two scenic byways, it remains surprisingly unspoiled by commercialism and "glitz".
Lake City is a mountain lover's paradise, offering some of the best jeeping, fishing and hiking in the country. With 5 of Colorado's "14ers" (peaks that are at least 14,000'
in altitude), it beckons the climber. Old ghost towns and mines will thrill the historian , and recreation in the form of hiking, biking, fishing and jeeping is endless. There are ATV and OHV trails galore, and plenty of trails for horse lovers.
Lake City also has entertainment in the form of a movie theater, a live theater, and a wonderful museum. The tour of old homes (even an occasional haunted house tour!), and the cemetery tour are very popular. Lake City also has many talented artists (including our daughter-in-law!) and craftsmen who display and sell their work in local shows, fairs and the many small shops sprinkled throughout the historic district.
Scenic day trips to Creede, Ouray, Silverton, Gunnison, Crested Butte and
Montrose, home of the famous Black Canyon, are fun diversions, but you will be glad to come back to Lake City, over and over again.
We hope you will choose Rocky Top Lodge as your home base during your Rocky Mountain vacation.
